How to use the Compress Image tool

  1. Drop the images you want to compress.
  2. Pick a format, quality and maximum width.
  3. Download each smaller file, or all as a ZIP.

How image compression works here

This tool uses three methods together, and each can be adjusted:

  • Format: WebP is usually the smallest. JPG works everywhere. Keeping a PNG as PNG rarely saves much, since PNG is lossless.
  • Quality: lower values remove more fine detail. 75% is a strong default for photos.
  • Maximum width: large photos are scaled down to the width you choose, which often saves more than anything else.

Each file shows its size before and after. If compressing would make a file bigger, which happens with images that are already optimized, the original is kept.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PNG?

PNG is lossless, so its size can only shrink much by changing format or size. Convert to WebP to keep transparency, or JPEG for photos.

Why is my compressed file bigger?

If an image is already well optimized, re-encoding can make it larger. In that case the original is kept and marked “already optimized”.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. HushConverts converts everything with code that runs in your browser, so your text and files stay on your device. You can even use most tools offline once the page has loaded.
