MP4, M4A and WAV in brief
MP4 is a container format used for most videos from phones and cameras. Its audio is usually compressed with AAC. M4A is the same container with only audio inside; iPhone voice memos and many music downloads use it. WAV stores audio uncompressed, which makes it larger but universally accepted by audio editors, DAWs and transcription tools.
Converting MP4 to WAV decodes the AAC audio into plain samples. The sound quality matches the original track; it can’t add back detail the AAC compression removed, but it won’t lose any more.
