How to use the WAV to MP3 tool
- Drop a WAV or other audio file onto the box.
- Choose the MP3 quality and channels.
- Preview the MP3 and download it.
WAV vs MP3
WAV stores every sample of the sound without compression, which is ideal for recording and editing but uses about 10 MB per minute. MP3 removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice and stores the rest efficiently, so the same minute takes around 1.4 MB at 192 kbps. That makes MP3 the better choice for sharing, uploading and listening on phones.
Which bitrate to choose
- 128 kbps: speech, voice memos and podcasts, especially in mono.
- 192 kbps: a strong default for music.
- 256–320 kbps: music you want to keep at the best MP3 quality.
Finish editing before converting: each time an MP3 is edited and saved again it loses a little more quality. Cut the recording with Trim Audio or raise its level with Change Audio Volume first.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller is an MP3?
A minute of CD-quality WAV is about 10 MB. The same minute as a 192 kbps MP3 is about 1.4 MB.
Will I hear a difference?
At 192 kbps and above, most people can’t tell an MP3 from the WAV. Keep the WAV if you still plan to edit the recording.
Is this a real MP3 encoder?
Yes. It uses the LAME MP3 encoder, compiled to run in your browser, so files are encoded on your device.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. HushConverts converts everything with code that runs in your browser, so your text and files stay on your device. You can even use most tools offline once the page has loaded.
